Circularity is a necessary shift to address climate change, biodiversity loss, rapidly depleting resources, and global economic inequality. That said, the challenge with defining circularity is also the source of its strength— that it doesn’t look like just one thing:
Yet, it is more than a mere toolkit of strategies, solutions, and techniques; rather, it is about redesigning human systems to transform industries, regenerate ecosystems, and foster more equitable and prosperous communities.
It’s a shift that goes beyond innovation; it’s a new way of thinking and operating that aligns economic prosperity with environmental stewardship.
To put the circular economy into practice, businesses must shift their focus from short-term profits to long-term resilience. Consumers can embrace new models of ownership which prioritize access over possession. And governments and organizations must create policies that incentivize sustainable practices and drive innovation. It requires a coordinated collective and collaborative effort to rethink not only how products are made and consumed, but how value is created and sustained over time.
The collaborative effort to rethink production, consumption, and value creation is the driving force behind the Canadian Circular Economy Summit (CCES), an event organized and co-hosted by CELC and the Circular Innovation Council. This event unites business leaders, policymakers, academics, and community advocates to harness the circular economy as a dynamic solution to Canada’s most pressing challenges, from affordability and climate change to housing, food security, and nature loss.
