LoopedIn: February 2025

Updates from CELC’s Managing Director, Paul Shorthouse

The proposed 25% tariffs that the Trump Administration threatens to impose on Canada on March 4, 2025, could have significant consequences for the recycling industry, especially in Canada, where trade relationships with the U.S. are vital. With tariffs targeting recycled materials and waste equipment, Canadian recycling businesses might experience higher costs and disruption in supply chains, particularly for essential machinery and materials. As the U.S. and Canada engage in over $8 billion worth of recycled commodity trade annually, the tariffs could weaken the market for Canadian businesses and potentially harm job creation.

However, this disruption may also present an opportunity for Canada’s circular economy. A circular economy focuses on minimizing waste and making the most of resources by encouraging the reuse, recycling, and repurposing of materials. For Canada, this could mean more than just coping with tariff-induced disruptions—it presents a chance to revamp our recycling sector into a more self-sustaining model.

The circular economy also presents new opportunities for local supply chains and partnerships, supporting “buy Canadian” initiatives which can help Canada reduce its dependency on external markets. This strategy could lead to more resilient and sustainable recycling systems within the country. The increased costs of materials could also spur greater demand for locally sourced alternatives, giving Canadian manufacturers a new domestic market opportunity. Moreover, embracing circular economy principles, such as reusing materials and extending product life cycles, can offset the adverse effects of these tariffs.

These are some of the important discussion topics we will be hosting at the Canadian Circular Economy Summit this April 15-17 in Montreal, where more than 900 business and industry leaders, government actors, and others will be exploring the power of the circular economy for tackling some of our most pressing issues.

This major convening is designed to support and foster new connections, build deeper relationships, catalyze investments, and grow diverse partnerships.  Featuring more than 40 sessions and interactive workshops, 130+ expert speakers, 6 half-day site tours, curated match-making, an expo with 35 exhibitors, a Quebec Pavilion, networking receptions, and more, we hope you can join us for this critical ‘meeting of the minds’, where innovation meets action.
