Canada must rethink how we build and rebuild. Circular construction is Canada’s path to climate and economic strength.
“This topic intersects with so many issues that are top of mind for Canadians today. For Generate Canada, it is directly relevant to our work on climate resilience, economic renewal, and sustainable community development. Every year, Canada generates millions of tons of construction and demolition waste, most of which ends up in landfills. At the same time, we’re facing increasing housing demand, major affordability challenges, and an escalating climate crisis.
For example, after the devastation caused by wildfires and floods, we’re not only losing homes—we’re writing off massive volumes of materials that could be salvaged and reused. In rebuilding, we often replicate the same vulnerabilities that left communities exposed in the first place. All these cascading issues and risks create a wicked problem.”
