LoopedIn: September 2025

Updates from CELC’s Managing Director, Paul Shorthouse

For years, organizations have worked to make procurement more sustainable—but what if the real breakthrough comes not from what we buy, but how we buy it?

Enter Buying-as-a-Service (BaaS): A model that replaces ownership with access. Instead of purchasing equipment or products outright, organizations can subscribe, lease, or pay-per-use. It’s a shift that doesn’t just cut waste—it can unlock financial savings, reduce risk, and open the door to more innovative solutions.

BaaS models can have a myriad of benefits, including (but not limited to):

  • Financial agility: With BaaS, upfront capital expenses are replaced by predictable service costs.
  • Built-in sustainability: Providers maintain ownership, so they’re incentivized to design products that last, can be repaired, and ultimately reused.
  • Flexibility: Need to scale up or down quickly? A service model adapts, avoiding the trap of overbuying or ending up with obsolete assets.

This approach is about more than efficiency—it’s a cornerstone for building a circular economy. By keeping products in use longer, organizations can meet their ESG goals while strengthening resilience and saving costs.

If you’re curious about how to make the switch, Circular Economy Leadership Canada, BCIT, HP Canada, and Shift & Build have just released a practical how-to guide on implementing BaaS in your organization. From decision-making frameworks to case studies and procurement templates, it’s a resource designed to make this transition real and achievable.
