World Circular Economy Forum Online

The year 2020 marks a year of change and adaptation. The COVID-19 pandemic has washed across the world and damaged our economies. At the same time, importance of a rapid transition to a circular economy is more important than ever. The whole world needs to find ways to get back on its feet, and we have a unique opportunity to support the sustainable recovery of our economy with circular solutions.

In September, the WCEFonline brought together over 5,000 global economy reformers to discuss the most important tool in sustainable recovery: the circular economy. The COVID-19 crisis, the escalating climate crisis and the loss of biodiversity have forced societies around the world to look for new sources of growth and new ways of reforming the foundations of the economy.

The CELC teamed up with the UN Environment Programme and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to host a session on the journey to a circular economy in the Canada-U.S. region. The session explored the ways in which a regional Canada/US circular economy will be different from the experience in Europe and in other parts of the world.  The session brought together circular economy leaders from both Canada and the U.S. to seek understanding of the barriers and opportunities for our existing energy, resource and manufacturing sectors, and to foster the creation of new engines of growth based on changing global consumption and employment patterns. WCEFonline presented some of the world’s top business leaders, policy makers and thinkers as speakers. These included Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme; Ricardo Lozano, Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia; Dame Ellen MacArthur, Founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation; Carolina Schmidt, Minister of the Environment of Chile; Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries; Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission; Stientje van Veldhoven, Minister for the Environment of the Netherlands; Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Canada; and Jyrki Katainen, President of Sitra, among others.
